USVI Photography Tips

If you are fortunate enough to be traveling for business or vacation to the islands of St. Thomas or St. John in the US Virgin Islands, be sure to pack your camera. You won't regret it, as the islands offer some of the most beautiful, natural settings for photography in the entire world.

Equipment

For great pictures on the beaches of the US Virgin Islands, it's best to use a good SLR camera. As with all outdoor photography in the presence of bright sunlight, be sure to use a circular polarizing filter on the front of your lens. Similar in effect to putting a pair of sunglasses on your camera, it will help you capture the deep blue skies, turquoise waters, and lush greenery present throughout the islands.

We also recommend using a flash to shoot people. It will help to fill in shadows created by the sun.

And, given the bright sunny conditions and reflective island waters, be sure to use a lense shade on your camera.

Settings

One of the great things about USVI photography, particularly on St. John, is that nearly every corner of the island offers a great setting for pictures.

For great beach pictures, we recommend Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay, Gibney Beach, and Maho Bay. All are accessible via short walks from nearby parking areas.

You'll also find plenty of great settings in the towns of Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. Give yourself plenty of time to explore the streets and sidewalks... and shoot, shoot, shoot!

Best Time Of Day

All professional photographers know that the best times of the day for outdoor photography are within 90 minutes of sunrise and sunset. This is when the sun's rays are at their longest and most flattering.

You'll find that the south side of the islands is best for morning shoots, while the north shore beaches are best for sunset photography.

Other considerations

Part of the beauty of the US Virgin Islands is the natural, rugged terrain... so plan on taking extra special care of your equipment. A waterproof, padded camera bag is a must, as are plenty of compartments to hold your flash, filters, and other gear.

Also consider bringing along a small can of Dust-Off to keep sand off and out of important parts of your camera equipment.
